Canopies along the entry of the Collins Hill Aquatic Center invite families in to enjoy a 25yx25m indoor racing pool with diving facilities for the competitive swimmer and aqua exerciser, plus an 8500 sf outdoor leisure pool for water play. A double height entry lobby, with nothing but a glass wall screening the competition pool, enhances the openness of the facility while maintaining a critical separation of wet and dry areas. Upon entry, one is offered a view through to the leisure pool, thus visually connecting indoors and outdoors. Sheltering the competition pool is a gently curving roof that reaches its apogee over the diving boards, then dips front and back to reduce the bulk of the building. Clerestory windows on 3 sides allow natural light to fill the pool area, while the roof overhangs and interior screen walls prevent glare and reduce heat gain. Locker rooms, classroom, offices and ample storage complete the program.
