MLK Jr. Branch Library

Atlanta, Georgia
The client's objective was to build a functional neighborhood branch library with an urban loft-like feel. The 4,124 sf historic laundry building serves the Martin Luther King, Jr. Historic District in downtown Atlanta.
The programmed spaces are layered from the front of the space to the rear, with the circulation desk and children's area near the entrance, computer desks in the middle and the stack areas at the rear. An elevated floor area at one end of the space contains an adult reading area and administrative offices. Three carpeted seating levels at the floor elevation change were designed for use as a children's reading area.
Library shelving with metal shelves and trim with frosted glass end panels were selected to provide a contemporary feel. Upholstered furniture uses a durable ultrasuede material in jewel tones of purple, green, yellow, and red to enliven the space
